Spencer Deutz Educates 43 Future Anglers at Grahams Island State Park in Devils Lake, N D

The Devils Lake Chamber of Commerce was scheduled to hold their 41st annual walleye tournament on June 23rd-24th with the rules meeting being held the night of the 22nd. As anglers entered the meeting, there was a lot of chatter if tournament director and National Professional Anglers Association (NPAA) member Johnnie Candle #42 was going to allow the anglers on the water the next day due to weather.

With sustained winds forecasted at 25mph and gust up to 40mph, the first day of the event was cancelled. The event was now going to take place Saturday and Sunday however the forecast for Saturday was not much better. When all 120 teams entered Grahams Island State Park Saturday morning, a tough decision had to be made to yet again cancel the day due to high winds. This also meant that the NPAA Future Anglers Kids Fishing Clinic that was schedule to be held Saturday would be pushed back to Sunday.

Tlight winds on Sunday allowed all 120 teams to go to catch their five best walleye. At 3pm, hundreds of fans and 43 Future Anglers sat in the crowed as the teams weighed their catch. Five walleye for 25 pounds took home the first place prize worth $7,900 including two $500 gift cards from AirWave Pedestals. Following the weigh-in and prior to the awards ceremony, NPAA member Spencer Deutz #552, held a Future Angler Youth and Family Fishing Clinic.

Forty-two Future Anglers gathered in the lawn to the south of the stage where Ranger Boats and Yamaha Pro Angler Spencer Deutz taught them about Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) and how to stop the spread of ANS by cleaning, draining and drying. Deutz also taught the Future Anglers about on water safety, proper ways to identify different species of fish and why fishing is fun.

Following the educational lesson, each Future Angler was given a t-shirt and a free rod/reel combination courtesy of the National Professional Anglers Association’s Future Angler Foundation.

Other volunteers included NPAA member Zach Axtman #512 and Carley Deutz.

In all, 42 Future Anglers and 12 adults attended the clinic.
