On Saturday April 28th, Spencer Deutz and Vison Bank of Fargo, ND teamed up to hold their first annual National Professional Anglers Association (NPAA) Future Angler Foundation (FAF) youth and family fishing clinic. The day brought sunny skies, 70-degree temperatures, light winds and 33 future anglers excited to lean about the sport we all love: fishing!
Future anglers were given a NPAA FAF Future Pro t-shirt and were directed to the conference room where refreshments and cookies awaited their arrival. Following the check-in of all 33 children, Spencer presented a 20-minute interactive seminar covering boat safety, aquatic nuisance species (ANS) and fish identification. Spencer also introduced a giveaway, Project Future Angler.
Project Future Angler is sponsored by Yamaha Outboards and with this, one young aspiring fisherman or woman will win a trip to the 2019 NPAA Annual Conference held January 4th-5th in Minneapolis, MN. The winner will have the opportunity to meet the best professional walleye anglers in the country as well as receive their own customized professional fishing jersey. Also included will be a NPAA Future Angler membership, conference fees, two nights lodging and a $100 gas stipend. To enter the giveaway, the future angler must write an essay on what they learned during the clinic and how they can help stop the spread of ANS. Essays will be sent to Spencer and the winner will be chosen early November.
Following the seminar, everyone made their way outside and separated into four groups. The future anglers rotated through all four stations which included a tour of Spencer’s Yamaha wrapped 2018 Ranger 620FS fishing boat, catching backyard bass, breading and frying walleye, identifying different types of bait, and viewing minnows on an underwater camera.
Each attendee received a rod/reel combination, an ANS water bottle, a SunButter backpack with SunButter samples and a one-dollar coin courtesy of Vision Bank.
Other volunteers for the event include Zach Axtman #512, Chris Holte, Ron Deutz, Carley Deutz and Cassie Sorlien,
In all, 33 future anglers and 24 adults attended the clinic.
