A Passion For Sunflowers Is The Seed For Sunflower Butter
The Red River Valley, which stretches along the North Dakota and Minnesota border, has long been recognized as one of the world’s richest and most productive agricultural regions. In Fargo, North Dakota, centered in the birthplace of confection sunflower, our founders at Red River Commodities developed a passion and a wealth of experience working with sunflower seeds. With an increase in peanut and tree nut allergies (the number of U.S. children with peanut allergies more than tripled from 1997 to 2008) we wondered if our sunflower seeds could be a part of the solution for kids and their parents. We imagined a delicious peanut butter alternative made from sunflower seeds, grown in the area. And we set out to make it.
The Making Of SunButter
We began working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop our SunButter Sunflower Spread. We initially expected it would be used as an ingredient in other food products. Soon, it became clear: We had a sunflower spread that would safely take the place of peanut butter for families with food allergies.
When we introduced SunButter in 2002, Governor John Hoeven declared, “Wow, SunButter tastes great and it is the future of North Dakota.” SunButter provided a solution – offering a delicious peanut butter substitute – for families with peanut and tree nut allergies. Our customers turn to this peanut and tree nut free sunflower spread for safe lunches, snacks and peanut and tree nut free recipes. SunButter is produced in one continuous process from field to table that ensures a fresh roasted flavor, improved product consistency and a finished product that is now free from all of the top 8 food allergens.
SunButter is not just for families with food allergies – SunButter is an ideal choice to send for lunches and snacks in schools that restrict peanuts or forbid them. It’s a healthy treat packed with more nutrition benefits than peanut butter and a delicious roasted sunflower seed taste.
Today you’ll find SunButter across the U.S. and Canada in grocery stores, specialty foods stores, schools and other institutions. SunButter is also available through online retailers. See our Where to Buy page for both online and brick-and-mortar store purchase availability.
